Cat sterilization: benefits, timing and recovery
Why spaying or neutering your cat improves health and behaviour — and what to expect.
Sterilization (spaying females, neutering males) is one of the most beneficial procedures you can choose for your cat. It removes the risk of unwanted litters and sharply reduces health problems later in life.
In females, spaying before the first or second heat greatly lowers the risk of mammary tumours and prevents life-threatening uterine infections (pyometra). In males, neutering reduces territorial spraying, roaming and fighting — which also means fewer wounds, abscesses and diseases spread when cats fight.
Most cats can be sterilized from around 4–6 months of age. The surgery is routine and done under general anaesthesia; your cat usually goes home the same day. Recovery takes about 7–10 days: keep the incision clean, limit jumping, and use a recovery collar if needed.
