Young animals grow fast and need food made specifically for their life stage. Puppy and kitten formulas have more protein, calories and key nutrients like calcium and DHA than adult food — feeding adult food too early can leave gaps at a critical time.
Look for a complete, balanced food that names a real meat source first and matches your pet's size (large-breed puppies in particular need controlled calcium for healthy joints). Quality brands such as Royal Canin and Hill's make life-stage and breed-specific ranges. Whether you feed dry, wet or a mix, keep fresh water available at all times.
Feed by the guidelines on the pack, split into several small meals a day for young animals, and adjust to keep your pet lean — you should be able to feel the ribs easily. Change foods gradually over about a week to avoid stomach upset.
