A painless scan that lets vets see inside your pet — how it works and when it's needed.
Ultrasound uses harmless sound waves to create a live image of the organs inside your pet — with no radiation and no pain. It's one of the most useful tools a vet has for looking beyond what an examination or blood test can show.
An abdominal ultrasound checks the liver, kidneys, bladder, spleen and intestines, and is often used to investigate vomiting, weight loss or abnormal blood results. Echocardiography is a specialised ultrasound of the heart that measures how well it pumps and detects disease early — valuable for breeds prone to heart conditions and for older pets. Pregnancy scans confirm and monitor litters.
The scan is usually done with your pet awake and gently restrained. We may clip a small patch of fur and apply gel so the probe makes good contact. For abdominal scans it helps if your pet hasn't eaten for a few hours beforehand — we'll tell you how to prepare.
